Unlocking the Science of Death Investigations: A Three-Day Forensic Programme in Singapore

We have just concluded a highly successful three-day lectures programme co-organised by Protective Intelligence Network, Singapore University of Social Sciences (SUSS), Changi General Hospital, and the Changi Simulation Institute, in the frame of the SUSS Public Safety and Security Programme, bringing together forensic science, criminal investigation, and cutting-edge simulation technologies.

The event was formally opened by Dr. Emily Ortega, Dean of the School of Humanities and Behavioural Sciences at SUSS, setting the tone for a powerful academic and operational exchange.

Associate Prof.Dr.Martina Focardi, forensic pathologist, Acting Director, Unit of Legal Medicine and Head, Forensic Pathology Unit, Careggi University Hospital – Florence

Dr. Edoardo Orlandi, lawyer and criminologist, University of Florence

Mr. Stefano Bandinelli, ballistic expert, Senior Superintendent (Ret.), Italian National Police

Dr. Razwana Begum, Associate Professor at SUSS and Head of the Public Safety and Security Programme

Participants were immersed in both theoretical frameworks and operationally relevant exercises, designed to strengthen interdisciplinary collaboration in complex death investigations.

Highlights included:

  • Realistic crime scene simulations with with life-sized forensic mannequins, offering participants practical experience in death investigation techniques and scenario analysis.

  • Child abuses forensic investigations and domestic violence

  • 3D reconstructions of violent death scenarios, aiding scene interpretation and courtroom presentation

  • A compelling case study on the “Monster of Florence”, Italy’s most infamous serial killer case, analyzing investigative findings and judicial complexities

Among the 50+ attendees were officers from several branches of the Singapore Police Force, specialists from the Home Team Science and Technology Agency (HTX), hospital executives, and academics from National University of Singapore and Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, and Khon Kaen University - Forensic Sciences Program in Thailand, reflecting the diverse and high-level participation this initiative drew.
